At the New Year many people resolve to change their lives for the better, leaving the old unhealthy, unworkable ways and embracing the new. We want self improvement that has us looking good and feeling good!

Unfortunately habits of thinking and behaving are difficult to change, so the diets, quitting cigarette smoking regimes, exercise programs, budgets, organizing projects, and other attempts fail for an overwhelming majority of people, according to studies and statistics. The bulk of people who actually gain benefits from all of these resolves and programs are the companies who sell them to people who seek to change their lives.

To succeed, self-change not only needs to be beneficial – it needs to be fun and interesting.

Further, as hunter gathers, human beings are wired to bring what they need to survive in — towards themselves. The basic act of eating, bring the bite of food toward and into one’s mouth fully shows this motion and principle. All of the above mentioned popular self improvement activities also involve that pulling something towards oneself motion with the initial purchase of goods and services, although after receiving the purchase that inward motion tends to slow down or stop, or as with some exercise programs reverse.

What if you could easily change your life – and for free while you enjoyed yourself?

Perhaps, even better – if you decided to go beyond all that you could do for absolutely no cost and made a purchase, it not only would be in something that has and is outperforming both the stock market and real estate, but would bring you pride of ownership while sharing it for the benefit of yourself and others. Plus, unlike any other type of investment, it comes with a full no-hassle money back guarantee.

You can change your inspirational vision about and for yourself, other people and also the world you see around you, easily, for free and while enjoying yourself. Plus, this will also actually change your physical vision, eyesight, so that you see more and are aware of more, especially of the Presence of The Divine in your life. Imagine having that sure reality in a time of trouble — a peace that surpasses all understanding!

You can even set up your daily environment so that remembering to practice this takes almost no effort of your part as it naturally becomes a part of your environment.

And, finally, once you have achieved the full benefits of your new vision, throughout your day you may also experience a natural lessening of unwanted emotions, such as fear, anger, anxiety, sadness, etc.

Now don’t you think that would be a really beneficial change for your New Year?!

OK. So if this seems too good to be true, then probably you are sane, as there has never been anything like it. It is wise to suspect something bait and switch or that is full of downright lies and snake oil.

When the new vision “happened” to me, which is how it was discovered, with all of its benefits, at first I thought I had a problem and then I though it was a personal miracle. It is neither personal to me nor an unexplainable miracle, although it still feels miraculous.

Scientifically, the easily obtained and fun to make changes that occur are fully explainable. Although based in ancient Biblical understandings that are now scientifically explained, one does not need to be religious or even spiritual to gain benefit. The theology being this is so universally held, it is basic to all branches and denominations of Christians, Jews, and also Muslims, Hindus, Buddhists, Taoists and many other religious and paths.

Interested? Then accept my free gift of an Introductory beautifully color art illustrated e-book in PDF form that not only explains what Awakened Vision is, it gets you started with fun brain games. Plus, again for free, you become a member of the special monthly mailing list that receives special offers, more freebies (like a web seminar), special offers and discounts, plus inspiration.

Valley of the 23rd Psalm

Today more than ever as a society and as individual we need to have and share a vision of hope and truth.

Back in 2007, when many of the ideas in this blog were originally posted, I was thinking about time in my life, and in the lives people I’ve known, when we individually dealt with the loss of a loved one, sickness and financial hardships. Today, we share in a recession including the many layoffs and unemployment, the foreclosures and the financial problems that are now also faced by a great deal of the world.

In the 23rd Psalm, the words translated as, “As I walk through valley of the shadow of death” can and is also translated as, “As I walk through the valley overshadowed by death.”

This may seem a slight distinction, but to me, the overshadowing of a valley seems darker than “the shadow of death.” That overshadowing seems total. Darker. Plus, the image evoked is more real.

Yet the description is of a shadow, a kind of darkness that can actually touch and “cover” us, as shadows do, but is not really a part of us. We can step out of a shadow.

Apparently there is another Hebrew version of the text, which translates as: “the valley of deepest darkness.” This seems worse yet, as it would be the darkest.

There are times in life where we feel that we are going through a valley of deepest darkness. When it is difficult to even marshal up any hope for the future, no less find some good in the current moment. For me, these were the times when I have also felt very alone and diminished in some way, such as by the loss of someone very close to me.

There is always some light that may seem hidden but that can be revealed in any darkness that is either perceived with the eyes or the soul. That physical light can be detected by instruments, and you can also easily learn to see more of it. For many people, this special physical light is symbolic of the very words and ongoing presence of The Divine.

The theory of Post Conceptual UnGraven Image art grew out of Judeo-Christian theology that begins with Genesis 1:3, “Let there be light.” Light is vital to our universe and without it there would be no colors, paintings or art. For Jews and Christians without the words of The Divine there would be no world.

The symbolism of the dark valley of the Psalm 23, suggests Genesis Chapter 1, when “darkness was on the face of the deep.”

Prior to the portion about the valley, the psalmist wrote that “He leads me in paths of righteousness from the sake of His name [or His name's sake].’ Following entering the dark valley the psalm continues, “I shall fear no evil, for Thou [The Lord] art with me.”

Back in January 2007, I was reading about studies of famous creative by neurological scientists. One dealt with how music affects our brains. Another study is researching a finding that the creative visual place in the human brain is close or coincides with the area that also deals with insanity.

For me, insanity would be the darkest place and we all — to some degree — deal with our own neurosis or illogical fears and concerns. Coping with the discomfort of believing lies (denial), unwanted emotions and fears leads to behavior that is out of control. A severe amount of this would be catatonia while the mild everyday –I can-cope-with-it variety leads all manner of behaviors that we resolve change repair every New Year.

It struck me as amazingly “coincidental” that the brain area that deals with area is near or coincides with the creatively visual area.

Ninty percent of (90%) of vision happens in the brain as it decodes impressions of light sent by the eyes. To see is to discern darkness from light. That kind of decoding (discernment) also occurs when we have a sudden inspiration or understanding and “see the light”. Think of all the cartoons that indicate the character getting an idea through the now universally understood symbol of a bright light bulb by the cartoon character’s head.

Inspiration, a new idea of vision can be understood as: light suddenly coming out of darkness.

Of course, that was before I realized in the spring of 2008 that when one sees enough (enough varies for individuals) of my artwork, one gains Awakened Vision thanks to the memories of that art, which the brain uses to decode more visual information. People who have gained Awakened Vision experience seeing more.

When we do not turn towards The Divine and follow our inspiration, our unique revealed path before us, we will inevitably go in a different direction. We stray, even for the moment, when we allow negative emotions to control us saying a few “deserved” but demeaning harsh words (which will make us feel better somehow) or tell a small, seemingly harmless white lie so our lives will be more convenient or acceptable to others, or pretend that a situation that we do not like does not exist, we turn away from what we know is true.

Instead, sometimes simply trudging along in the valley of deepest darkness, even somewhat blindly, serves to take us to a new place of inspiration where suddenly a “feast” is found, our cup runs, which moves us toward the fulfillment of our greatest needs and hopes. We see light come out of darkness.

They were the first paintings after the tsunami, when coincidentally my area was engulfed by a blizzard.

The wild animals of the tsunami almost all “knew” to head for high ground just as the wild creatures in my area, where forage is otherwise generally plentiful managed to find food and shelter when a blizzard simultaneously hit my area and the snow was a foot and a half deep. Thus these bird paintings began my painting series entitled, Written on the Wind.

Like the sheep in Psalm 23, the cardinals outside my window somehow managed to find food and shelter, after also somehow remaining safe during the blizzard. As I listened to the tsunami reports and watched the birds outside my window, it was clear that they “saw” and followed the prodding of some divine staff and rod that despite dire circumstances kept them safe.

According to the Psalmist, even in deepest darkness the Lord is with us. I paint using the Hebrew letters from original Bible texts to represent the smallest essential pre-particles (also known as strings and membranes). This is basic Judeo-Christian theology applied to fine art.

As we learn to actually see more, what is called Awakened Vision, we become more aware of the energy, which for many are (or symbolize) the words of The Divine. If we can remember and even picture the very Words of the Lord surrounding when we are in a time of a dark valley, then we can know that we are loved and not alone.

In the darkest times we can “see” our next step if we can envision that we are surrounded by the very words and promises of the Lord. All we need to do is ask for and take one small step forward with The Divine and we will “fear no evil for thou art with me.”

People who have *Awakened Vision can see this and gain that comfort, hope and peace.

Twitter has proven to be one of the best resources for immediate help and information during an immediate local emergency due to earthquake, hurricane, spreading fire, earthquake, tornado, tsunami or terrorist attack.

Twitter’s Volunteers

There is a small army of tweeting members who “volunteer” their help by retweeting messages from the Red Cross and other rescue sources such as local news, police, firefighters and regular people like you and me, who are caught in the midst of the event and have valuable information that can help others.

Joining in…

My first experience of tweeting a message to help others was during a weekend phishing attack in mid November of 2008. The phishers knew to take advantage of the fact that the techies, who then had the largest followings, were absent on weekends I had fewer than 2,000 followers, but I discovered that we could help others by continuing to retweet the warnings about the phishing and the news.

It was an amazing experience as I watched members of the Twitter community step up and work together for a common good, just as people would do in any community that was dealing with a threat. That is when I “fell in love” with Twitter and the potential it gave to us all.

Within a week, the word “Mumbai” became a Trending Topic. This seemed weird so I clicked to check on it. Mumbai was under attack from terrorists. People on the streets in Mumbai were tweeting information as to where the gun shots were coming from. There was no time or opportunity for anyone caught on the streets of Mumbai or in the nearby buildings to turn to the radio or TV for help. By using the hashtag #Mumbai we retweeted the information as they tweeted it to us so that others on the streets knew where to go for safe shelter and what buildings and what streets to avoid. Live were saved thanks to those tweets.

How You Can You Help

Retweeting information during an emergency is super helpful even if you only have a few followers because it keeps the hashtag trending so that the people who are victims of the emergency can find it easily. More importantly, if we keep retweeting, people who are caught in the emergency can hopefully turn to Twitter and immediately see helpful information as to where to go to be safe, what hospitals are open, the roads that are open, and where to evacuate immediately. It also helps to retweet information from the victims so that first responders can know where they are.

Further, in a natural disaster power lines, radio and phone towers and reception can be compromised. By retweeting and retweeting life saving information it will appear at the top of the Twitter stream for a victim who may have just seconds of reception to see it.

During a natural catastrophe often phone and power lines go down. This compromises communication to the news media such as radio and TV so that Twitter can become the only resource that people have for any helpful news. The Twitter community needs all the volunteers possible to RT immediate information as to what hospitals are open, what roads to take, where victims need help, where shelters are, and more. And we need to keep tweeting it.

Twitter’s the Best Source for Immediate Disaster News

As I wrote this blog I was listening and glancing over to CNN where @piersmorgan and @andersoncooper are covering the horrendous tornado that hit Joplin, Missouri the previous day. At this time that night CNN was turning to Twitter and reading tweets that we were retweeting for the news, it was their best source for news.

The April 2009 earthquake in Italy killed 2009 people. As soon as Twitter received the news, we again joined together to help relay rescue information to and from the victims of this disaster. I had a few followers comment then that they had already seen a message from me which actually dealt with what hospitals people needed to go to. It became clear that some people were annoyed that I my tweets had ceased to fill them in on art, inspire them, or be otherwise interesting or entertaining.

I explained and a few joined me in retweeting valuable information. But, a few people unfollowed me because what I was tweeting was not interesting for them since they were not in Italy. Somehow, that did not seem like much of a loss for me.

How to Join In

Once you realize there is a disaster or emergency taking place at the moment look for a Trending Topic that could indicate it. Such topics have included; “Eathquake”, “Italy”, “Chile”, “Tsunami”, “Haiti” and “Joplin”.

Although it goes against Twitter TOS and is bad twitterquette not to use “RT’ or “via” to give credit to the originator of a tweet, during an emergency no one sane cares about taking credit. It is wiser and perfectly acceptable to Tweet a whole message full of information and delete the name of the originator if it fails to fit in within 140 characters.

A New Twitter Role

Generally, I am not a source for news, except in relation to the art world ad a few select causes that often involve freedom, justice or tolerance. I am an artist and founder of a new art theory of Post Conceptual Art, including a branch of that called UnGraven Image. You can see more about that at ungravenimage.com.

I am also a member of the community called Twitter. As such, people get to know me. Sometimes I share a joke or useful information that just seems helpful to others, too. I do converse in the stream. Yet, mostly I tweet about art or inspiration often based on art or other artists.

Two days ago a tornado hit Joplin, Missouri and decimated much of it, including one of its two hospitals. Coincidentally, people who live in Joplin are also members of my Twitter community. Thus, they are my neighbors. We have Twitter neighbors around the world, of all races, beliefs and ages, who joined together to retweet useful information to help the people in Joplin.

You Are Valued

I hope and pray that we never have another emergency or disaster anywhere in the world. But if one occurs please join with me and your twitter friends and neighbors to retweet and tweet helpful information. Tweets that can help save lives and prevent casualties during an emergency are the most valuable and important tweets we can send.

The Woman of Valor Rosebud – Red is art that celebrates the special women in our lives. Each and every stroke that creates the image is created with a letter from the original Hebrew text of Proverbs 31: 10-31.

A red rose is a meaningful universal symbol for love. They also stand for respect and courage. Red rosebuds mean pure and lovely. These understandings of feminine virtue are found in Proverbs 31:10-31, which is also known as the Bible’s Woman of Valor.

Traditionally Jewish men read this scripture passage to their wives of the Sabbath as a tribute. It is also a custom to bring flowers to the wife or any home that one visits for the Friday evening meal. This ancient custom continues to this day.

Rosebuds symbolize beauty, youth and an innocent heart.

A single rose stands for simplicity.

:The wilderness and the solitary place shall be glad for them; and the desert shall rejoice, and blossom as the rose.” –Isaiah 35:1

There is nothing more difficult for a truly creative painter than to paint a rose, because before he can do so he has first to forget all the roses that were ever painted. — Henri Matisse

Below is a close up of a detail of the artwork so that you can see that each and every letter, which may overlap and be placed this way and that, is always an original Torah font letter of the scripture text of Woman of Valor.

A fine art archival print of this unique Post Conceptual and UnGraven Image artwork is makes a special gift for a beloved woman, including wives, mothers, girlfriends, sisters, daughters, grandmothers, teachers, and best friends. This is also a beautiful gift for the bar mitzvah girl, sweet sixteen, bride to be, expectant mother and bridesmaids.

Unlike a bouquet of live flowers or fruit, this is art she can cherish throughout her lifetime.

The spring festivals of Passover and Easter are about the transformation that occurs when one completely follows The Divine*, which for monotheistic Christians and Jews is the One God.

There is a rebirth that occurs not by the decision – but by the actualization or enactment of that decision. The decision is easy, but carrying it out is almost always fraught with difficulties.

The adversities can be understood as tests in which one proves ones determination, probably more to oneself that to the Divine. Persistence and endurance will overcome any of the adversities; they will also bring a miraculous new life.

Our adversities and troubles can often be understood as blessings in disguise as they often inspire us to redouble our efforts and focus on The Divine through prayer, meditation and study. It has been said that, “There are no atheists in foxholes.”

Often, when in good times we celebrate, even pat ourselves on the back for our victories and focus less on The Divine*. We grow closer to The Divine, and thus become more of our true selves when we are desperate for help. We learn to focus on The Divine through prayer, meditation and study, because we really need help and may have nowhere else to turn for relief. As Aristotle said, “We learn by doing.”

Embarking on the journey of following The Divine means leaving behind anything, and even anyone, that is not a part of the journey. Whatever we must leave behind is always something that is only necessary to support our ego or our false pride and diverts us from being our true selves. What and who we surround ourselves with helps us keep or lose our purpose and chosen vision.

In Exodus we learn that although the Israelis were not affected by the twelve plagues, they were subject to the wrath of those around them, which considering they were slaves must have been horrible. Yet, Moses persisted and returned again and again to Pharaoh asking that his people be allowed to leave Israel .

Finally, the Israelis were allowed to leave Egypt but they had to hurry! The Israelis needed to surround themselves with visions of a new life of riches and splendor, not the old life of poverty and slavery, both physically and metaphorically as shown by the Bible’s description of the Egyptians giving them precious gold and jewels.

The Bible does dwell on the obvious: what they had to leave behind, such as their homes, which were meager havens but filled with precious memories, including the wonderful recent meal they had shared on the night the Egyptians lost their first born sons. It was a hard life, but it was what they knew and had, but now they had to embark on the unknown.

Transformation always involves willingly entering the unknown and wandering around in it for a period of time. Birth itself represents transformation when we leave the known security of the womb and wander through the birth canal until we become a new viable human being who can breathe freely. In Genesis, The Divine blows His breath into Adam, which makes him alive. Every other living thing is spoken into life but Man, who is formed and then given the breath of The Divine. Thus according to Genesis, our breath shows that we live and metaphorically indicates The Divine in us.

The minute the Israelites left Egypt they were breathing as free people. Their behaviors and activities were no longer slaves who were subjected to the will of others. Experiencing their new freedom they immediately lacked ego, which in scripture is represented by yeast, which puffs up bread and is a metaphor for false pride and willful behavior. Thus initially during their journey in freedom, they ate matzoh as they turned fully to The Divine.

According to Thomas’ account the transformed and risen Jesus spoke to him. The act of speaking proves a person is alive as no one can speak without breath.

For both Jews and Christians and everyone else spring brings a new vision. We celebrate the transformation of the trees and perennials that come into bloom, plus it is a natural seasons of birth and beginnings. We are transformed by what we see and then by what we do.

Wishing you and your loved ones the freedom and blessings of transformation and meaningful holiday this spring.

* The Term “The Divine” is used as a general term and the reader is invited to substitute their own best and theologically correct term whenever it is used. Given the many names for God or the higher power, this prevents misunderstandings.

The branch of Post Conceptual Art known as UnGraven Image offers anyone the opportunity to share and display Bible text(s) openly, anywhere. This is because the images are secular.

What makes these works religious and special is that the strokes that form the art are symbols from Bible texts. However, the strokes are used just like traditional strokes, one over the other, interwoven, and glazed. This means the letters and words are generally unseen or distinguishable. Unlike Conceptual Word Art the strokes cannot be read. Yet we know the words of The Divine are present in the artwork, just as we know that there are pre-particles and waves, particles, atoms and molecules that are the scientific basis for the physical universe that we see.

Like the tiny essences of the universe, the pre-matter and waves that elementary physics’ calls strings, the strokes interweave, join together and form the visual universe of the image. According to basic theology held by all branches and denominations of Christians and Jews, plus as mentioned in the Koran, when the Creator speaks the physical universe into existence the letters of those spokes words were and are the essences of the physical universe.

“And God said, ‘Let there be light.’”— Genesis 1:3

Founded by artist Judy Rey Wasserman, Post Conceptual Art uses symbols for each and every stroke. The branch of UnGraven Image uses original letters from Bible texts for the strokes in artworks. The meaning of the artwork is inherent in the strokes, not the narrative image the strokes produce.

Share the Bible Anywhere with anyone – Legally via 21 st Century Post Conceptual Art

Post Conceptual Art, especially through the branch known as UnGraven Image allows to you to show your patriotism with a fine art print of President George Washington. You can even display the Ten Commandments in public places thanks to this open edition print of George Washington, which is created using the words (letters) of Exodus 20, the Ten Commandments, for strokes.

The strokes of this artwork are the original letters of Exodus 20, the Ten Commandments. As the first President of the United States it was George Washington’s job to administer and safeguard the laws of the nation , including the constitution. It is widely held that much of the laws of the Constitution were based on the Ten Commandments, especially the understanding that the laws pertained to all people alike.

Want to bring the Bible into your office or waiting room without offending non-believer customers?

The beauty of Landscapes in Sunsets and Seasons of Trees

Scientific studies have shown that when people are shown images of nature, or allowed to take a brief walk in nature (such as a park) they come back more refreshed and perform better at tasks that people who see cityscapes or other images during their break.

Therefore the landscapes are especially helpful when displayed in offices and places of study. You are not only bringing the power of the Bible text(s) into the room, but looking at the images is reviving and uplifting. Of course, unless you explain the significance of the strokes, no one will know the “secret” intrinsic Bible meaning of the works. You can display these works anywhere with pride.

In Genesis Dalet the moment of light depicted is so strong that it seems to create a dip in the land beneath it from its “weight”, looking like a heavy object placed on something soft like foam or a quilt. In reality, this effect is created as the bright light reflects and visually seems to overtake whatever immediately surrounds it.

Sometimes an inspirational idea we have can almost weight us down with its significance that we must somehow express the excitement, which can include jumping up and down, which visually echoes the sun in Genesis Dalet weighing upon the horizon.

Genesis Dalet uses the original Bible’s Torah font letters of Genesis 1-3:7 for each and every stroke. These strokes make it a member of the Genesis: Sunset-Sunrise series. Among other things this series is about moments of inspiration and understandings — those AhHa moments, when we “see the light”.

Post Conceptual UnGraven Image Art uses the Creator’s words as the strokes in every image. These symbol strokes also represent the strings of elementary physics, the tiniest pre particles and waves that are the basis for the physical universe. When you display this artwork at home, or your place of business it will visually remind you everyday that problems and cares are never really solid as the physical universe is comprised of tiny pre-particles and wave motions, which we can also understand as the words of The Divine, who according to Genesis speaks the universe into existence.

“And G-d said, let there be light.” –Genesis 1:3

“So shall My word be that goeth forth out of My mouth: it shall not return unto Me void , except it accomplish that which I please, and make the thing whereto I sent it prosper.” — Isaiah 55:11.

This Giclee print is created in the artist’s own studio using Epson fine art printer and inks for the best possible archival quality and reproduction. We use the highest dpi resolution possible, which is higher than the online sites that produce prints and Giclees from images for merchandise — this means you get better clearer details so that you can actually see the letter-strokes. This print is the best quality digital print available or possible today from any artist – It has to be the best we can offer — it’s from the Bible!

Awakened Vision helps transform the grief and mourning by instilling an awareness of the presence of The Divine, and the words of the Creator in each moment of our live, whatever is happening and whatever we are doing. This can dramatically transform life, including the experience of grief and mourning.

Grief is a normal and healthy expression of loss.

Infants cry in grief when they lose something or someone precious to them, which can be as simple as someone they love walking out of the room. Young children can grieve over losing a favorite toy, but no longer consider it a possible irrevocable loss when someone they love walks into another room.

We fear the loss. It threatens us. We feel diminished. The future we envision seems threatened.

Our understandings about loss changes as we mature and what we value most can also change.

Although unexpressed or stuffed and denied grief can lead to emotional problems, including depression, grief itself is not depression.

Depression involves hopelessness. It also tends to lack the passion a grieving person feels, including a passion for getting over the grief!

When a loved one, such as a cherished parent, child, close friend or mate dies grief is normal and natural. Generally the strength and love in the relationship determines how much grief we experience. The general rule of thumb is that for someone close it takes at least a year to grieve. Each new holiday, each experience that normally would have been shared with the lost loved one, brings a new realization, recognition and experience of the loss.

The irony is that anyone who suffers the death of someone near and dear to them and has experienced grief, even overwhelming feeling grief, is truly blessed. Blessed because of having a wonderful parent, spouse, child or friend, which is a blessing that others lack. All of the experiences that were shared remain as memories that may feel sad now, but in the future will be cherished, uplifting and encouraging in the future.

As an artist, I am concerned with the visual aspects of grief. We visually project and make memories of a future we intend or intended to have with our loved ones, such as holiday events. Plus, we have visual memories of experiences that we have shared with our loved ones. The world we see around us can remind us of our loss.

These memories of imagined futures and real pasts pop up to us, thanks to our brains, when we experience (especially including see ), people, places and/or things that are a part of these memories. When this happens we again feel our loss.

For example Thelma, who is your much older second cousin, a sweet lady who lives far away but always attends weddings, funerals and the annual family picnic, passes away. Thelma enjoyed the blueberry pies you brought to the picnic, and always told you how good your pie was. This year as you prepare a blueberry pie to take to the picnic, you will pause as usual to think of Thelma’s appreciation of your pies. But this year that usually pleasant moment of remembrance will immediately tow in the memory of Thelma’s death, and the understanding that she will not be appreciating this pie you are baking. This new understanding will probably include feelings of grief and loss. Although there is little in your daily life to remind you of Thelma, at the picnic itself she will also be missed.

Mourner’s Prayer is one of the earliest Post Conceptual UnGraven Image painting by Judy Rey Wasserman. The image is of a memorial candle that is traditionally lit at sundown but lasts throughout the day. Thus the candle’s light, reminding us of the light the loved one brought into our lives, continues on as bright as the light of the day, as represented by the sun.
When someone we are close with on a daily basis passes away, especially if it is someone we lived with or worked with, our daily lives are filled with visual items that trigger memories of that person. The more time and interaction we have with someone, the more memories we have of them in places we know, using items we recognize, interacting while we do the things we normally do.

People who have gained Awakened Vision, and so see more energy, usually do not experience negative or unwanted emotions that are associated with people, places or things that they see, especially when what is seen is not actually any real current threat. However, grief can seem to alter that.

Something seen can seem to trigger the grief, which is an unwanted emotion. Actually, the grief is not an old memory of emotion, but a new experience in relation to a very wanted and cherished memory of a loved one, which then turns into grief and mourning when it is realized that the loved one will never use the item, attend the event of be here in that same way again.

The brain is always set to survival and survival enhancement—that is basically its job. Survival enhancement means what gives pleasure or promotes survival, even when survival is not threatened. What we choose to enjoy the brain remembers, and we can enjoy that again and again.

Previous to Thelma’s passing she may have been thought of whenever a blueberry pie was made or even purchased or eaten. The memories of her happiness and appreciation of the pies you made was pleasurable and affirming – these are the kind of memories we choose to enjoy.

During the grieving process these enjoyable memories remind us of loss – the loss that we will never again experience in real life the company and affirmation from the loved one. Yet, these are not full unwanted memories or emotions—we want to keep the memories of the happy times and experience those emotions, but we do not want to experience the pain of the grief.

Later, when the grieving is successfully completed, there will once again only be the happy memories, without the grief.

Awakened Vision helps transform the grief and mourning by instilling an awareness of the presence of The Divine, and the words of the Creator in each moment of our live, whatever is happening and whatever we are doing. This can dramatically transform life, including the experience of grief and mourning.

For instance, returning to the example of the loss of Cousin Thelma above at the point making this year’s blueberry pie and realizing that Thelma will not be at the picnic to enjoy it. Although all of the types of memories indicated previously may be experienced, including the grief, following that is the sure visual recognition of the presence of The Divine, especially the energies, which are understood as the Creator’s words surrounding us and creating everything in the physical universe. That understanding, in a moment of grief, offers comfort and peace and hope, which can transform grief and mourning into a process of a closer experience and relationship with The Divine.

Parents, relatives and caregivers for the children set examples to the children and community of their values and faith. We can bring The Divine into the secular, even the day of Halloween, by what we say, do and even wear. Like the Jack O’Lantern and Apple O’Lantern, we can shine our light in the darkness.

Halloween celebrations and festivities can present unique challenges and problems for Christians and Jews, as this holiday has become greatly secularized and is celebrated in places of work, on our streets and stores where we shop and in the schools that our children attend.

Children are especially beguiled by Halloween as it promotes dressing up in costumes, getting and eating lots of candy and being scared and scary in safe ways.

The Roots of Halloween

Halloween is not a Christian or Jewish holiday; nor really is it a secular holiday. It is a Druid celebration that is also associated with Wiccan rites (witchcraft) and also has roots in roots in the Celtic festival of Samhain.

As a harvest festival marking the time of the autumn equinox this celebration was very popular throughout Europe even during Roman times. As Christianity spread, the Catholic Church had a custom of creating rival Christian holidays at the same times as Pagan ones. Thus the Christians were celebrating their holiday along side the pagans in the small villages and towns, which made conversions easier to accomplish. This is why All Saints Day, and All Souls Day came about, which like all Hallows Eve also focus on the dead. There is no similar holiday in the Jewish calendar, and none of this was ever celebrated by Jesus, the disciples or the early Christians.

Halloween is not a secular holiday, nor does it celebrate the harvest like Thanksgiving. Pause for a moment to consider the symbols that have nothing to do with the harvest itself, in other words, moving beyond the candy corn and pumpkins.

Look at the witches and broomsticks, skeletons and tombstones (representing the spells that were used at this time to conjure up the dead), the devil costumes, and the black cats (superstitions) to see the true basis of Halloween.

Special Concerns for Parents & Caregivers

For Christian and Jewish families, Halloween brings special concerns and challenges. The basic concepts of Halloween of tricks, spells and mayhem are opposite core values and teachings of their religions. Many public schools hold Halloween parades when the children show off their costumes, which in some locales they are allowed to wear to school. Children and parents are invited to parties, to join in trick or treating activities and many of the neighborhood children, all dressed up in costumes ring the doorbells of the people they know and trust expecting treats.

As a parent or guardian explaining to a young child that we do not celebrate Halloween because it is not our holiday sends an awful, and actually untrue message about God and one’s religion to the child. Basically all a young child will understand is that the kids whose families do not follow God or believe as we do have more fun and treats. This is not exactly the message Christian and Jewish families intend to give their children

Below are some fun and meaningful solutions for families and caregivers of children that are successful for Christians and Jews who live in secular communities.

Trick or Treat?

Explain to the child what the phrase, “Trick or treat”, really means: That it is a kind of threat, that if a person does not give a treat then a trick will be played on them , such as toilet papering their yard. Although, of course, we and our friends would never do such a thing, this is what it means. Tell the child that you do not want them to use this phrase, ever. Period. Tell the child that when you go to the home of friend he can hold out his goody bag and ask nicely for candy, using the word “please”. Since what the child wants is candy, this works.

If you select to join in and go door to door with a child who wears a costume, include collecting for a charity. This further removes the child from the concept of “Trick or Treat”, as now the child holds out a collection can and says, “I’m collecting for_______” or “Please help save_________.” Many charities will provide you with a collection can or you can easily make your own from a coffee can, which usually has a plastic lid, so you can collect for a favorite charity.

When you collect for a charity on Halloween, most people will also give the child some candy. This reinforces the idea that doing something for others does bring rewards. So be sure to bring along a suitable bag for candy, too.

AppleOLantern Bag Basic by judyrey

Collecting for a charity also takes the emphasis off of the candy as when you arrive home, the parent can make a big deal of county up the money with the child. Be sure to involve the child with sending or bringing the money and presenting it to the charity also.

In addition, and especially if the parent does not take the child Trick or Treating, explain that you as the parent (or caregiver) will provide the child with all the candy he needs, and so he does not need to go from door to door begging. Then be sure to provide a young child with some special candy or treats on Halloween, especially if they go to a public school.

Costumes

If the school your child attends allows the children to wear costumes to school and/or has a school parade, have your child select their favorite person from the Bible. and that they can wear a costume and go as that person. Little girls who want to be princesses and queens can go as Esther, or also as Mrs. Noah (see below). Boys do well as Joshua (this includes a toy or homemade cardboard sword), David (slingshot), or as Noah (pull a wagon with an ark/boat and lots of animals stuffed and/or plastic).

Children can also dress up as famous men and women of their faiths who were leaders or in the arts. Notice how these costumes give you a chance to talk about your faith and values, plus perhaps teach a little history. [Note: Although public school can come down on what appears to be bringing religion into schools, most people in the Bible were real and historical figures and thus those costumes work. However it may be unwise to send a child to school as Jesus, Mary, a nun, priest or an angel as these are overtly religious. It depends on the administration of your school.]

A popular alternative is to dress up in the costume of a profession, such as nurse, fireman, policeman, ballerina and have a discussion with your child about that profession and how someone who does this job well can promote your values.

A Trick or Treating Alternative Destination

Visit a nursing home and/or shut ins.

Instead of going door to door consider setting up a visit to a local nursing home with a child or children in costume on Halloween afternoon, and/or visit shut ins in your community.

Bring treats to these people – do not ask for any, although some may be offered. and accepted. A parent or guardian can do this alone with their children or with a group of other parents and children. Teenagers can also come along, which gives them a chance to also dress in costume – but for the cause of giving pleasure to others. Teenagers are amazingly good at passing around a basket full of treats and tend to be very patient with the elderly!

The residents will enjoy having the costumes explained, because 1.) they will like the attention and interaction with the kids, and 2.) being dressed as a historical person or a professional person is a lot more interesting than store bought character costumes. Instead of asking for treats, have (and teens) the child give each person in the nursing home event a small candy or fruit, just as is done with Trick or Treaters. Arrange your visit ahead of time with any nursing home. Usually, these facilities are delighted to have such visitors, as this brightens the lives of their residents. Quite possibly the will invite all of the resident to a recreational room to take part in the event.

Parties and Scary Houses

Chances are someone in the neighborhood or the child’s class throws a party and invites the child, and possibly the family. Some youth centers, after school care providers and even churches hold parties, Haunted Houses and events on Halloween.

Often people do this to help keep the kids off the streets and away from ringing doorbells and collecting treats from people the parents do not actually know and trust. This can also be done to keep teens off the streets and out of trouble on Halloween, especially when the teens are given the job of creating the Haunted House booths, events and entertainment.

There is no reason to call the party a Halloweens party, call it a Costume party, or a Blood Gut and Gore Party, even a Spooky or Scary House party. If the party is held in a recreation area belonging to a house of worship, ask for a goodwill donation at the entrance to help pay the expenses of the event or to support a charity.

The activities can be named for some of the gory and even yucky moments in the Bible that will give a scary or uncomfortable moment to the grade school group. As kids stick there hands in boxes to feel the eyeballs (canned olives) brains (wide spaghetti), liver (cut liver-sized bottom of rubber flip flop dipped in baby oil) and “guts”(Jello) they can be told that these are the remains of the losers of one or more of the Bible’s battles.

The “fun” of a Scary House is being scared. Instead of ghosts, goblins, devils, witches, etc. , as kids wind their way through a darkened maze, why not help kids face their real fears? Have a “Bully” who threatens to take their lunch, a Robber wearing a stoking over his face and someone in a bear or gorilla costume jump out or otherwise frighten the children who must always be escorted by an older adult of teen.

The scary time and fun of this kind of event is the same but the spiritual, theological and psychological effects of this kind of party are different.

Bobbing for apples, carnival booths involving throwing balls, rings, and one where someone gets dunked are also popular.

Include prizes for various categories of Best Costume, including Best Biblical Character male, female, Best Famous Person costume male and female, Best costume of a Professional Person male and female, Most Colorful costume, best Least Colorful costume, etc. These and other categories can then be further broken down according to ages, for instance Best Biblical Male Costume for a Six Year Old. The idea being to give every young child except those costumed as the devil, a terrorist or something or someone else that should not get approval or reinforcement. However, even a young child who does not have a costume can be given a prize for doing the best job of coming as themselves. Books make great prizes or simple prizes may be bought at the local dollar store.

Of course, it does not have to be Halloween to enjoy such a party or event, and that is the whole point!

Share the Faith

The ideas above are ways that parents, grandparents and guardians who are Christians and Jews can share their values with children in creative, educational but non-preachy ways, creating experiences that children will enjoy and remember.

These activities also gently share one’s faith and values with others who see the children, including teens, and interact with them. These are ways of shining one’s light.

Since Halloween has been brought into schools and businesses, I wanted to provide a way that Christians and Jews could also celebrate their beliefs on this day in public, by simply wearing a shirt, using a mug, or carrying a bag.

To this purpose I created an image, my first one that is really meant more as an illustration than fine art. The image is called, Apple O’Lantern. This image is created using the original letters of Psalm 17 for all the strokes to create the artwork.

Using strokes that are symbols to create an image is the new Post Conceptual Art, which is new to the 21st Century. Using the symbols that are original Bible letters from scriptural texts for strokes is the UnGraven Image way of creating Post Conceptual Art.
Psalm 17 refers to the Biblical theology of being the "Apple of His eye", which is shared by Jews and Christians.

This became entwined with the northern European fall custom of carving faces and putting lights in pumpkins, gourds and other somewhat hollow fall produce to light the way at night, including the most popular night of the equinox which fell at about Halloween then. I’m guessing that the idea was that Jack was smiling as he bested the devil! At this time all the Apple O’Lantern merchandise for the whole family is exclusively available through my Zazzle store at http://www.zazzle.com/judyrey* . All of the items that simply are entitled “Apple O’Lantern” and show the image are legal to wear anyplace; including public schools and places of business where tee or sweat shirts are worn. The items with the Bible quote, “I am the Apple of His eye” may not be allowed in public schools due to the scripture reference.

Pagan, then Secular to Real Value

The ideas above can and many have been successfully used to turn the day of October 31 (AKA Halloween) to one that is useful to teach and uphold the beliefs and values of Christians and Jews, and even share them with others by examples that are fun.

The emphasis on selecting real heroes and heroines to portray through costumes helps children be more creative, teaches Bible stories and history in a fun but practical way.

Children are given a hands-on experience in helping raise money for a charity that is successful and rewarding for them. Teenagers are given the opportunity to communicate in an entertaining way with the elderly or help younger children have a good time and face their fears. Teenagers given the task of coming up with Biblical battles or events to illustrate for booths and activities will eagerly do research in their Bibles, too.

Parents, relatives and caregivers for the children set examples to the children and community of their values and faith. We can bring The Divine into the secular, even the day of Halloween, by what we say, do and even wear. Like the Jack O’Lantern and Apple O’Lantern, we can shine our light in the darkness.
